I feel really stupid. I finally got the OS install to work. The reason for all the difficulties? I was using the wrong version for my device. I thought it was an 8820. This morning while I removed the battery once again, I noticed that there was a sticker in the battery bay showing 8800!

Well, I downloaded the new OS and it is currently installing perfectly.

Thanks again for everyone's help. I'm sorry that it turned out to be a real stupid error.

No problem. This method or upgrading in general has a particular process, and it works the same way for everyone. So when most people have a problem, 9 times out of 10, the problem is a step has been missed. Most people say, oh no I didn't miss anything, but usually that is the case. That's why you were asked.
