Ok, so last night my girlfriend decides to pull the battery on her Curve 8530. Don't know why, I showed her how to reboot her phone without a battery pull. When she put the battery back in, the phone began wiping itself. There was a white screen and it said "Wiping" with a status bar below.

After the phone finished booting, her contacts where gone, she needed to redo all her settings, and all her app icons where moved back to her download folder. The apps were still installed, just the icons where moved. The OS remained the same (5.0.734).

My question is - why did the phone decide to wipe itself, and has this ever happened to anyone else?

I do a battery pull pretty much every day, not to reboot the phone, but just to change batteries. I've never had my Tour or any previous BlackBerry (7250, 7290, 8830) wipe when I changed the battery. I think what your girlfriend experienced was a fluke failure.

Jeff I'm curious as to why you do a battery pull everyday to change the battery?

I start the morning with a fully charged battery. It's typically down to 10-20 percent by 5-6 pm, so I switch to my spare battery. I'm aware there are steps I could take to extend the battery life somewhat, (turn down the screen brightness, disable Google Latitude, don't use Bluetooth, for three examples) but I have a spare battery and a quick charger, so I just swap batteries.
