It's not really the same thing.

You use 'penetrating' as a holistic term - ie. a literal umbrella. If rain can get through, the umbrella has a hole.

If you look closer into the PRISM leak - you'll realize that the officials claim it was only metadata that they were intercepting. This is also very possible in some ways with BlackBerry communications.

Consider the visit of the politicians and officials in London - they probably spend their nights at nightclubs and drinking - security is not on their mind in general (especially when the communiques aren't sensitive).

Any kind of casual texts/personal emails could have metadata intercepted.

Also, remember that the British government has backdoor access to BlackBerry security (anyone who STILL thinks the internet isn't monitored in light of PRISM is a complete fool).
