Why is it that Blackberry OS is all carrier branded and specific?

Wouldn't it be great of all updates were OTA directly from RIM?

Because there are many different styles of blackberry's and they all have different specs. So the os has to be changed to alter the way each different phone runs.

Carriers sell and support the devices. RIM writes the device software and the carriers test and release and provide first line support. Under the circumstances it makes sense for the carriers to brand the software. At least I see the carriers' perspective on this.
