The whole family has PAYG BBs, two on Vodafone and two on Tesco. When we go to the US next week, will we be charged for BB services, primarily BBM? I'm hoping to send the kids off into Disneyworld and just call them back when required ;-)

Sorry for the illiterate title. I'm actually second-only to Will Self when it comes to big, complicated words normally.

Depends on how roaming works with your carrier, or even if you get any service as you are PAYG. I doubt you will get roaming cellular service because of that, but if you do get roaming included with your carrier, then everything should work, unless you have to pay while being on roaming, in which case it could cost quite a lot. You should contact your carrier and ask them about how roaming on PAYG works, and have them check how it works with your plan.

Though BBM allows you to avoid SMS fees, it does use data, and likely use your prepaid data. Even if you have a free social plan (in Canada you can get unlimited BBM, Facebook, Twitter, email with some carriers), that may only be in your service area. Being outside your service area will probably result in voice and data roaming fees. Every couple of months a news outlet here will tell the horrible tale of a Canuck going to the states or another vacation destination, only to get hit with HUGE bills because of data roaming fees. I would confirm this information with your carriers.

You could also turn off your BB's network transmitter, and go on wifi exclusively. Not ideal, but cheaper, and things like email, BBM, BBM voice (assuming you have latest BBM) should still work if both you and the kids have access to free wifi.

Thanks. Carriers aren't being too useful ATM but I'll keep badgering.

Just managed to talk to Vodafone. Blackberry services will be charged at 5/day up to 25MB and 3/MB over 25MB that within the day.

So, I reckon I'll spend a few minutes unlocking them and just buy some prepaid SIMs over there if such things exist.

That's the best thing you can do.
    Unlock the phone.
Come to the USA store called T-Mobile and purchase a pre-paid SIMCARD for $25.00 USD
Just need to purchase internet minutes / phone minutes (extra $15 USD)
