Unless you are on WiFi you wont receive data while on the phone. Text messages should be fine with a GSM carrier.

3G gives the capability of data coming in and out while on a voice call. Edge isn't capable of doing that. I'm not sure about EVDO though.

EvDO is Evolution for Data Only/Optimized so by definition the radio can only send/receive data or voice (on 1X) but not at the same time like with HSDPA, AT&Ts 3G technology.

Actually the 8900 has wi-fi. I dont see why you cant get text while on the phone though. it works with any other phone while on edge.

Anything can be used on 3G while on the phone.

I dont get emails while on phone but texts always come thru. Check in ur ring profiles in the sms and make sure you dont have it set to do not disturb

I get texts while on the phone.. and I have the 8900. Data I wouldn't know because I'm rarely on the phone long enough to get bored to the extent that I need to surf the net
