With all the info that's coming out, they should give the carriers the middle finger and just update all BlackBerry 10 phones. They already screwed them out of sells, so hey just update the folks with that internal good good.

All updates come from Blackberry servers.
The hold up is literally just waiting for the carrier to say "Okay. You can release it. "
If Blackberry wanted to, they could easily flick the switch tomorrow and upgrade everyone to 10.2.

I agree with OP though. Just give us the Damn upgrade!!!

They can but yet they cant. If they do then they might not have that carriers support. If something in the OS causes problems then the carriers get the support calls, not bb

Si!!! Roll out that 10.2 MR, we already know that's ready. They should be working on 10.3 and making the GUI look all glossy and have the os running like it was 8 cores but it's really on 4. They dont have S H I T to lose.

Pish posh. Apple or AT&T which 1 should I call first. When AT&T lame brains can't help you, you call up the maker of the product.

They could just bake the CB10 app into 10.2 and rename the icon "Technical Support",.. it'd be so much fun for you guys!..

Not to mention this is likely all spelled out in whatever contracts BB has with the carriers.

Exactly. BB has CONTRACTS with the carriers, and those contracts certainly spell out the fact that BB cannot roll out updates without carrier approval, and I'm sure there is a penalty associated with breaking that rule.

Hey, they are (probably) exiting the consumer market right? What if, they choose to end working with the carriers and start their own infrastructure for all their enterprise clients? Not sure how feasible this would be and how much would need to be set up in order to ensure high uptime, but wouldn't that be a +1 on the security side? No communication that goes through telecom providers, who are notorious for passing everything through to the NSA! And on the plus side, software updates would be instant!

Guess this is probably not doable?

There's no way that's even possible - they'd need to hire a massive workforce just to build towers and a few data centers, buy and/or rent frequency bands, hire more people to maintain it all. There's a lot more, I'm just hitting a few major points. They need the carriers as they always have to provide the network, even for BES.

Edit: Sure, it's possible. But not probable.

Yes, it is. Use the PlayBook support number and hit the corresponding key it asks you to press for BB10 devices.

I rang it once. Once they learned I hadn't been referred through by the carrier all they wanted to know was my credit card number. I politely declined their generous offer.

1-800-039-536 ? That's the Australian number (or it might work in any country) and I got connected with a specialist in the UK back in February when I called the number on Skype. He even took remote control of my computer to fix the issue and not once asked for a credit card. I've also called numerous times since then and have never been asked.

Sure for those brave enough to install them. Which is quite simple for "us". And quite scary and complex to someone who knows zero about technology. None of my friends root/jailbreak or install leaked OS's. This is not a wide distribution method BlackBerry could count on for its OS.

Directly sell unlocked phones. Include a simple instruction sheet on how to setup pay-as-you-go accounts on all carriers. Totally bypass carrier support. Push updates directly. Carriers don't care to sell BB phones anyway. Carriers don't care what phone you have as long as you buy service from them.

I've been using my two Z10s off contract since I got them. I'd be hard pressed to enter into a carrier contract again. I still have to get my OTA updates using a carrier SIM. I have SIMs for four different carriers so I use the SIM from the carrier with the most current OS.
That's not cheaper. BlackBerry would have to provide after sales support and warranty services. Even more expensive in the long run.

Nope, when I had to call in it was 50 to connect. I wound up calling carrier and they put me through to blackberry and picked up the tab. Once your out of the (I believe) 90 day Window you are in your dime.
