Started a new job this week and there are seven people that use BlackBerrys.

Here is what I discovered and assisted with.

    1) Color of LED: One of my staff asked how did I get my light to flash green.
I explained BeBuzz, PimpMyMail, Blink, SmartAlerts, etc. The rest of the staff
    was majorly impressed by this.

    2) Not one of these people knew they could access Twitter, Facebook, etc
    from their phone.

    3) Not one person realized they could use their phone as a multimedia device.
I don't (BB sucks for this IMO) but they were astounded.

    4) None of them knew how to check their memory. I got that squared away.

    5) Four users had know idea what model phone they had. At just a glance
    I knew.

    6) None of them knew what an OS was and what they were on. I spent
the bulk of yesterday upgrading OSs

    7) Half of them did not know they had a memory card and when pointed out
they had no idea what to do with it.

    8) Not one of these people ever used or even knew what BBM was. They are
all in each others contact lists now.

    9) 3 never got an email on their device because they did NOT KNOW you
    could (This shocked me)

    10) None of them knew about themes (several are very happy) and no one
    had a 3rd party app installed (here I created a monster, I think )

Needless to say thanks to what I have learned here I will be getting them
squared away (when free) but how on Earth have these folks existed this
    way for almost 2 years?

Some people just aren't on the technological edge. I'm guessing 40-50 years of age? No offense to anyone in that age bracket.

That's what companies get when they throw a smartphone in to their employees hands and give them squat for training. This never made sense to me.

Glad you could enlighten seven people on how awesome/useful a berry can be

I understand completely Ken! You're lucky they want to learn. Most of my coworkers "Just want a Phone!" Used to drive me nuts, but now a couple of them and I have our own group and ignore the others. They do get jealous sometimes because mine is a personal device without the Websense App blocking their every move.

It feels good and I have done the same but you quickly realize that you can't blend back into the shadows if you need to. Now you are their dedicated BB support person who will take the bad with the good whenever something concerns them.

It's a tough choice - to help or not to help. Teach to fish, you understand.

Lol, Tran, most of the people I help are much younger than I - 55.

No, actually I am the oldest person. All but 2 of my staff is over 30

Not the companies fault. We are not on a BES (this will change.) These are
personally purchased devices. I did speak to the CEO about doing a one day
BlackBerry in-service. That got approved before I could take a seat

Maybe I'm just a nerd stuck in my own bubble and since it all makes sense to me everyone should understand it.

What exactly have they been using the BlackBerrys for? Why BlackBerrys, or any other smartphones, if they do not use them for email?

Mike, when I went through the 50+ apps on my phone, what they do and why
I need them my boss was sold. She dropped about $100 on apps before lunch.
You'd think she has a brand new phone

It's actually cool getting people excited about the platform and they certainly
    seem willing.

Those 3 used the BB as a phone and PDA ONLY. Sad I know. None of them
knew they could even go on the internet.

Ah I see. Maybe when you guys get BES, they will hire you to show the employees the way of the berry. if that's your cup of tea

I think the one thing I show people that causes the most ahhs is the app switcher. It is fun to show them how to multitask.

It would be guys and Laura but I am a numbers cruncher at heart. I'll assist where
I can for the time being. Next step is to get them all signed up here.

I have a friend who is a Network Administrator and BES Administrator. When I told him I got a BlackBerry, the first thing he told me was to join here.

Oh without a doubt! The BES admins at the corporation I worked at never gave training on the devices. Just helped when you had problems. I couldn't believe it.

I know somebody who has a company issued BlackBerry, and she never received any training in how to use it. I showed her the app switcher, explained themes, and sent her here.

She has an 8330, but she had no clue what it was. I knew what it was just from looking at it.

Excellent advice and I do agree about the training. I did that with my last job
and can't see leaving this group going along the way they are. They really have
no idea what they can get done with what they have right now.

Will work on lesson plan this weekend (in between moving.) The 101 will be in
    full effect.
