How old is the phone. It sounds like the battery is dead/dying/bad cell etc. Does it work okay when the phone is plugged into power? If it does you need to see about getting a replacement battery.. Amazon.com sells OEM batteries for 2-3 dollars, if that turns out to be the case.

    EDIT
I see you have an 8900 in your profile, this might be an error please report what phone you have...

Strongly suspect a bad battery with that description. With the price of replacement batteries as low as $4-5, you would be in a good position to pick up a couple and have a spare.

I didn't know what device OP had, so that probably nullifies the cost of a new battery. Entirely possible that it's a defective, may be able to get one on warranty, then.
