Not at all surprised, kids love exploring

5 year old me would have also loved a phone with plenty of buttons, to a kid a button represents another new thing to learn/discover.

My friends 10month old for example loves taking all the remote controls in the house and absolutely hammering the buttons

The Classic was a cool device, my favorite will be the Blackberry Bold which I always thought had the best forum factor of any Blackberry I owned.

On the OS10 side, I will always have a soft spot for the z30 and the passport, two great devices.

No, because our family is all on BB10 for messaging. I'm the only one with a BBMe account (on Android), and I'm just using it for work.

I gave my elementary age kid an old Z3. Cheaper than a junk Android burner. The kid can't get into trouble with social networks but can use BBM to communicate with contacts I set up.

I'm sure I'm the only parent in the world who does a lot of things, but my wife and I love the fact that I can easily limit the communications circle to trusted partners using BBM. Kid is not allowed to use SMS or the phone at all, so the phone is really an old-fashioned 2-way pager!

What about WiFi? Have you found a way to disable that?

"my wife and I love the fact that I can easily limit the communications circle to trusted partners using BBM. Kid is not allowed to use SMS or the phone at all, so the phone is really an old-fashioned 2-way pager!"

Based on that, I figured you surely would not want your child to be able to connect to the Internet via WiFi.

It's not a concern because kid knows not to add networks, and we've added the ones we're comfortable with. Kid has a data plan and can get the Internet anytime, but also has shortcuts to approved Web sites in a folder and knows not to enter any other URLs.

We trust kid with phone, but it's also easier with fewer ways to get in trouble.

Actually, that's a soft control against lots of Web browsing! We've preloaded shortcuts to approved Web sites.

If kid was more "creative," I'd just install a DNS that blocked all but white listed sites, but thankfully, kid is respectful of online rules (for now.)
