"The venerable BlackBerry brand is generating big buzz these days. With the launch of its new, much-improved BlackBerry 7 operating system and a suite of new smartphones to go with it, the folks at Research In Motion have made the mobile world that much more interesting. We recently spoke with Andrew Bocking, VP of Handheld Software at RIM, about the big changes and fun features BlackBerry users can look forward to in the weeks to come."

Can you speak a little bit about the new BlackBerry phones coming to the market? What are some fun features, defining traits and possible surprises?

The new BlackBerry smartphones are more social than ever before. With BBM6, the real-time collaboration of BlackBerry Messenger is extended to apps and services, allowing users to communicate with their BBM friends within a game of poker or find friends using the Wikitude World Browser. This makes it easy to share with friends and family. No one else offers this today.

Augmented Reality is a really fun new feature which uses the digital compass and the Wikitude World Browser application to let you to see where your BBM friends are by simply holding up your smartphone and looking through the camera viewfinder. Imagine being able to find your BBM friends no matter where they are in a crowd. There are also some great new applications for gamers like 3D Rollercoaster Ride which really shows off the power of the new BlackBerry smartphones. Another new feature is Near Field Communication, [a technology that allows nearby devices to wirelessly exchange information, especially popular for credit card purchases Ed.] which will allow you to tap on smart posters and pair to accessories.
The new BlackBerry 7 lineup introduces an evolved BlackBerry user experience born from compelling performance, powerful new experiences and amped social collaboration - all on a powerful new hardware platform. When it comes to performance, Liquid Graphics technology and browsing are at the top of the list making the BlackBerry experience faster, richer, and more fluid. This fast, fluid BlackBerry 7 experience is available in a broad range of form factors tailored to suit the needs and preferences of a wide range of consumers.

Will these new smartphones still have the classic BlackBerry look and feel?

Yes! If someone wants our iconic design, premium materials and all the latest hardware features we have the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930. The BlackBerry Torch 9810 offers a full touch screen without giving up the award winning BlackBerry keyboard. The all-touch BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860 offer an all-touch design without compromising the communication, collaboration and productivity characteristic of all BlackBerry smartphones. All three are blazing fast and take the secure, data efficient competencies BlackBerry is known for to the next level. The new line of BlackBerry Curve smartphones (9350/9360/9370) also features a sleek new design that will be appreciated by existing BlackBerry Curve users and those looking to upgrade from a feature phone to a socially connected smartphone that's very approachable (and affordable).
