just curious if it actually needs a certain HW chipset for it or it's just a SW play...

cause if it's just SW play, why can't RIM implement Mobile Hotspot on all the OS6 devices?

    Thanks.

Basing on techinsights, the wifi chip on the torch 9800 (OS 6 device) supports SoftAP (software access point). Meaning, it was not implemented via software in OS 6.

Hardware limitations do exist for older chips though.

There was rumour that mobile hotspot on the Torch would be available in OS6.1 but nothing has really been heard about OS6.1, OS7 took the headlines leaving no upgrade path for Torch OS so I wonder if we'll ever see this.

I'd even settle for a third party app developed to do this but given the Torch chip is software dependant I think RIM should release an updated OS to activate this feature.
