No. It was under their watch that a great company went down a bad path (or two or three). It is taking much longer than expected to right the ship. It is still their responsibility and they paid the price (as did the shareholders and loyal customers).
Nope. They charted the course to h3ll, unfortunately they built a huge clunky boat to get there and it isn't turning on a dime. The question is will the ship turn before making it to the destination they started.
No way they are the one's who started sending RIM to the bottom.
They're the ones who didn't start working on a proper modern OS until 2010. If BB10 had been started in 2007 January when it should have been, it would be available already.
No! For all of their brilliance, and no one can deny that, they are the ones whose
decisions and management got RIM to where it is. I pity Mr Heins for having to be
the public face of the cleanup crew.
No freak' n way; the reason why RIM is in the mess is due to their own arrogance regarding the competition and what consumers were wanting/demanding in a phone. If they had not mocked the original Iphone and had realized that multimedia/gaming/entertainment were going to be so important in the mobile industry, RIM might not be in the mess that they are in now. Instead, they failed to innovate; they failed to change; they failed at understanding the market - they became stagnant and rested on their laurels. The result is what you see today.
Even worse than that, they innovated in half measures. I know I sound like a broken record
but lets go back to the Pearl 8100.
First BlackBerry with a still and video camera, memory card for storage, Media Player.
This was a stellar consumer device that RIM really should have used as a platform going
forward. What did they do? They kept pushing out devices that were variations on the Pearl
8100 (Curve - full QWERTY, Bold - fat, 8900 - Bold on a diet, etc...) instead of creating
devices that expanded the capabilities of what should have been a perfect jumping off
point into the consumer space. This was a total and abject failure of management to
see the potential goldmine they had.
This is spot on. Mike and Jim even though they did essentially help to invent the "smartphone market" they were a one trick pony with push emails and buried their heads in the sand while the industry passed them by. They deserve credit for making Blackberry a success, but just as much blame for running the brand into the ground by failing to even try to keep up in many aspects...
They started digging RIM's grave so I def don't feel bad for them
It's RIM as a company as a whole that should be blamed in the beginning for not recognizing the obvious.
Mike and Jim ignored their customers - plain and simple. And even when they saw their competitor making strides against them .. they did nothing. It was all talk. I had .. have a new resurgence in the my expectations from RIM when Thorsten took over but he was very late to the game. I appreciate everything he and his team are doing but launching a completely new platform and mobile device is a huge task and he has little time to implement.
Mike and Jim should have been removed a long time ago.. RIM should have recognized very early on that they had outlived their usefulness and needed someone more capable to take their place in order to grow RIM for the future.
