On the top of my screen under the date i have an icon with the number 3 and what appears to be a voicemail icon. I have no voicemails but I want to confirm what that icon means? is it the 3G network icon?

All icons should be listed in the owners manual. Have you checked that yet?
You mean we actually have to look at a book?????? Is there not a key somewhere within the blackberry???
They do put that book in the box for a reason. :)
