if I buy a memory card for my BB, when i put it in my phone will everything like my pics etc. automatically get saved to my card or do i have to change the settings?

The device should recognize the memory card and all subsequent "automatic" downloads (with the exception of apps) will be placed on the memory card.

You will be prompted to choose a specific folder contained in the memory card, however.

And anything you have saved to the device currently will need to be manually transferred.
