Your free memory will vary and will be at it's best JUST after a battery pull (I pull mine around once a day). There are other tricks you can use to free up memory too, check the Memory Cleaning tip in my Tips & Tricks thread listed in my Signature. Also in that same Forum are other Tips & help threads.
EDIT: Like Skull said as long as you are over 12M you are cool, once you go under that the BB reclaims memory on it's own and will delete messages and performance will suffer.
That's mostly true. The 12MB min. was more needed with OS 4.2, as it had a crappy memory management system. With 4.5, memory management is much better, and you can probably get as low as 3 or 4MB without it reclaiming memory, but for optimal performance, I'd still keep it at 10MB+
