i.e. do you need to apply same procedures as you do with a flash drive each time before unplugging from computer so file systems don't get damaged?

I do, and for the little time it takes, why not? Good insurance.
99% of the time, it doesn't matter, but there is the 1% of the time that you will lose all of your pics or corrupt your card, and lose all the content on it. Like Vortec said, it doesn't take long and is good insurance..
I typically don't. I just make sure Windows Explorer is closed before unhooking my BB.
I found that if I unplug my BB without using "Safe Removal" first, the BB will not let me access the SD card until I run a checkdisk on it.
I've never lost anything, but it is a pain to have to recheck the card jsut because of not doing the safe remove process first. It's just a couple of extra clicks, so I make sure to do it every time now.
Wow. I NEVER go through the routine. Just unplug and go. Never had a problem. Of course, make sure that your computer is done transferring data to/from the card.

You may have no problems, 999 times out of 1000. But, you are risking data corruption if the filesystem is not completely marked as written. If that happens, the best case would be that you'd need to run CHKDSK to repair any corruption... worse case is it's not-repairable.
"Safely Remove" flushes the write cache and verifies that the filesystem was properly written and the data is coherent.
Just like with making backups, the only time you will regret NOT doing it is, when you have a problem.
As suggested above, it only takes a second, you should do it every time!
I didn't do it for the first month or so that I had my BB. However after reading about it and corrupting a 4G micro card I now do it faithfully every time. It only takes a second and I feel that I am "better safe than sorry" now that I have a 16G media card.

Only thing I wish is that you could do the remove device once and have it apply to both the BB and the card.
Disable write caching as described in this thread and you can unplug without any worries: http://forums.crackberry.com/f83/removing-usb-77931/
I have never done it and been using blackberrys for over 4 years and so far have lost 0 files lol. I mainly use ubuntu linux ATM(ver:8.10-intrepid ibex) tho but rarely use windows too! So I don't think its necessary but if you need the piece of mind that it'll be safe I guess take the extra 1 second to do it lol!
