I was looking in the Blackberry 101 topics and saw something about the sleep button (the one on top of the phone). Can you press the button to lock the phone rather then clicking on the lock button? And unlocking by pressing this button again rather than hitting * send?

Yes you sure can. It wont necessarily lock it but it wont allow keys to be accidentally pressed.
