Anyone keeping track of weeks-long art exhibits, coworker vacations, sports schedules, lent, whatever?

How are you doing this without blacking out your entire calendar with full day appointments?

You could enter it with a fixed start and finish time every day, then set it to repeat daily until the end of the event/vacation/whatever. That way it would still show up every day but wouldn't overwhelm each day's calendar the way that an "all day" event tends to. Just an idea to consider.
