I was thinking about trying out a blackberry and I currently have an iPhone. If I were just to switch my sim card to a blackberry without changing my data plans, would I be able to use all the features of the blackberry?

NO, you have to have a RIM (either BIS or BES) data package, just popping in your SIM card and running will not allow you to access the RIM servers. That's where the magic happens.

There is no charge to switch data plans, all you need to do is call AT&T and they can switch the IMEI of your handset, and switch you over to the BIS data plan. I did this for my buddy over the winter, easy as can be.
