My friend in Europe has a non-BlackBerry smartphone with some kind of limited data plan. She's using an app called Parlingo to communicate with me over yahoo and gtalk instant messengers. Is she using data if her Parlingo app is on, and she's signed in, even if messages are not being sent in the moment? Or is data usage taking place only when messages are sent and received? And how much data is being used in either case? Is it a lot, or is it negligible? TIA for your thoughts and experiences.

I have some friends in Australia with Optus, they use palringo on their iPhones. One says it's not that much but stays mostly on WiFi just in case. Sorry I can't help much beyond that :/
