Hmm. Other platforms offering more features for the same price, needs changing and overall dissatisfaction with a brand can be another reason why people switch. Why should someone be loyal to a brand? I am loyal to myself and MY money, and if company Y is going to offer me more than company X for the same price, my money is better off over there. If company X come back and offers as much or more than company Y, then they will be considered again.

Why are you assuming that I'm disagreeing with everything you said?

And buying it now is better than upgrading to something else and then having to buy it later, which will cost more than the premium fees you've paid up to that date.

The fact an the matter is simple. With RIM devices, you won't even have a choice. That's the issue here.
There was no assumption involved. And you spend no premium upgrading to a phone you can't use fully now if you save it to when you can use it.

I've seen the 'dissatisfaction' post of the folks who've bought into the hype, who've only discovered that they bought a Porsche with an Escort engine. You look cool, but stomp on the pedal you're just keeping up with the rest of traffic. I'd rather drive on the data Autobahn after they build the on-ramps.

I'm eligible for an upgrade in Feb--getting a 3G phone would be like buying a b&w TV or a monophonic music system. It's 4G or bust!
Maybe I can ease your worries a bit.

    1) It isn't 1960 (b&w TV) or 1977 (monophonic music system.)
    2) 4G is a gimmick, or if you want, a buzzword. There is no such thing as 4G. The speeds being flaunted as 4G are an upgrade to the 3G network. 4G as it is thought of by the entire world who is buying into the marketing of the major carriers will not be ready for nationwide implementation until 2014-2015 at earliest. So if you're gonna say 4G or bust...you may as well get used to the phone you have for a few years.

Well, nice to have a 4G device right now. Now only for want of a network. LTE is just now rolling out. Spot here, spot there. By the time you can use your marvel of 4G technology, you're gonna be looking to upgrade anyway, unless, of course, you live in one of the 'gifted' locations.

Lol, I was doing 140mph on the Autobahn in 2009 on my Pan European and I thought it was great until I was left for dead by some Mercedes. Literally counted to 5 and couldn't see it anymore. My suggestion is to buy a phone for now not for 2012+ as by that time your 4G phone will be deemed too slow or too old. Never mind tomorrow, worry about today.

It seems smart to me. The developing market is much larger than the U.S. Market. They can make higher profits that way. Trying to please a small minority of whining spoiled Americans is no way to make real money. That relatively small group changes their mind every couple of months anyway.

Then why isn't android and iphone going for developing countries? Makes more sense that Android and iphone get their pick of the feast while RIM is left with the scraps.

Actually they are, there's a a multitude of cheap android phones on the market, most of them prepay. Why does everybody think Android only makes top end devices? Or should I say manufacturers out android os on cheap devices too, you only hear of the top spec race ones.

That's what people forget, beside push email, qwerty keyboards and UMA maybe, Rim has never been cutting age, late to have 3G, late to have memory cards, late to have cameras and when they did they were low mp(but still good quality daylight photos were possible)

I don't know why everybody expects them to compete with android and apple on specs. Blackberry has never been about specs.
They haven't been THAT far behind, if behind at all. The Curve and Pearl already had a camera when the 1st iPhone came out. They were able to add Video with an OS update. You had to buy a new iPhone (or jailbreak) for it to do video. Plus the camera had a Flash, but they were only good for daylight shots, compared to the iPhone? They had media cards, too. Quit revising history to fit your argument...

The #1 thing for me is, if they want me to sign and commit to a 2-year contract, they device that comes with it better be in line with the most recent technology, since it will be obsolete long before my contract expires.

My current job pretty much dictates that I have a BB (only BES email is available for mobile access), so unless I want to start carrying 2 devices (which I absolutely do not), switching to Android or iPhone isn't even an option for me. I'd also like to stay with Verizon, but that's not as crucial.

I've been happy with BlackBerry up to now, even as a Storm owner...but I've been quite disappointed with the lack of new device development. I really like the touchscreen Storm series, and would possibly even consider a torch-like device if it came to Verizon, so I was hoping to hear of some LTE goodness early this year. I guess not...

Maybe you guys never got them in the US but Nokia and Sony Eriksson had phones with 5+mp cameras that could surf the net as well as get emails and had memory cards way before blackberry had. They even had forward facing cameras. My last phone before I got my first blackberry was HTC M700, google that and you will see what I mean, it even had gps. This when the 8300s were just coming out and 8800 were still for sale without a camera.

One reason and one reason only the iPhone and Andriod hasn't destroyed RIM in developing countries. Ignorance.

My friend works in a pretty popular cellphone store and most the people who come in look past the HTC Desire etc and go for the 9700, 9550, 9800 etc. Why? Because they know nothing of Andriod OS, specs, nothing. BlackBerrys are whats in and BBM (i have to admit deservingly so) is all the rage. I know a guy who actually traded a N900 for a 8520 because he simply didn't know what he had. Well i guess the second reason in regards to the iPhone is cost. You would have to sell a kidney to buy a IP4 locally.

Of course the others are rolling out 4G phones now. But they have just as much 3G capability as A BlackBerry . However, will you get to use it in 4G? Stay tuned....

You win the award for the most naive post of the week. Ever heard of using one's cell phone to access the internet?? NO BB is good for that--too darn slow. When I'm out and about, I'm not going to stand there like an *****, waiting a minute or more to do something that should have come up in a few moments. Browsing the web on a BB is a pitiful experience.

Yea the iPhone and high end Android devices cost a lot. Plus BBM saves money for those who can't afford better data/text plans. It sounds like the carriers/manufacturers need to advertise their Android devices better in Barbados. Once BBMing is picked up by half the Island, you can bet the other half will follow.

You sound surprised. In the past few years, when has RIM been on the cutting edge of technology? I expect refreshes (just adding more memory and maybe a better camera and OS 6 to every BB line) until the first LTE BB is out. Maybe they will introduce QNX on that smartphone.
Surprised? More like aggravated, if the report is true. RIM needs to stop being last to the party.

And before the HTC m700 I had this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_K800i

With forward facing camera, 3g, 3.2mp camera with flash, browser, email etcetc this is way before iphones or android phones.

Here is my point i make when ever one of these threads pop up. Phone choice is a personal one. There are those that love bb and may never leave and those like op here who are going to leave for the latest and greatest. Brand loyalty is a concept lost on a lot of the younger crowd. Just so they can stay with the latest and greates phones. Or what ever.

So in light of what op is saying, if you dont like bb, get the f*** out and give your spot in the forums for someone who wont clutter it up with the i hate bb stuff. Not everyone cares about your lifes decisions.
I'm 63 and I have little brand loyalty. I buy whatever brand I like the most, at the time. Past experiences with a brand factor into it, but I'm always willing to consider other brands. That doesn't mean I haven't bought the same brands over and over again, and shy away from certain brands that I feel have a long history of defects. But I don't just automatically buy something just because a previous model worked well for me.

One of these things I have to say is that aside from ATT's lack of 3G-ness (is that a word? lol) some of their 3G cities, such as Houston for example have speeds of over 5 Mbps on 3G, so I can wait for 4G/LTE once the phones have been tested and built to perform and/or have some battery life... just look at the evo 4g... when on 4g it's a battery hog ... nuff said lol

I think the lack of 4G in the countryside areas makes this a non issue for alot of people. I remember when 3G came out it wasn't everywhere either, but now I can travel the remotest backroad using verizons network and have full 3G service. I wonder how many towers verizon has nationwide and to make them all 4G available is going to take time. I'm not ready to pay extra for sporadic 4G service when travelling. By the time RIM comes out with a 4G enabled device verizons network will be in a better position to utilize it more often. The BB web experience is grossly lacking imho anyway, so how would 4G where available help that issue? I don't blame anyone for wanting the latest/greatest speeds. Just get the device that works for you and call it a day. To b!tch at RIM and stress over how they operate is kind of ignorant. We have choices folks.
