    Hello Crackberryers,

A friend gave me a Bold 9000 to play with. What I'd like to do is set it up to use G-mail, contacts, calendar & tasks. If it's possible I'd like to add in app usage. Assumingly all on the wi-fi.

About the phone; it's running OS4. I've heard that I need OS5 to get native G-mail support. The phone was originally on the Rogers network with a SIM card. I've got an active Rogers pre-paid SIM card, but the card/phone doesn't have a data plan with it, only calling & SMS.

Can I somehow tweak the Bold 9000 to let me use the SIM Card so that I can access App World, upgrade to OS5, and then set-up the G-mail connections I'd like? I've got the card installed in the Bold right now and it receives texts. I'm missing the option in the Setup folder to set up a new e-mail account, and I've got an active wi-fi connection while trying to do this all.

Plus, if I choose to activate it in the near future, I'd hate to miss out on downloading some of those freebie apps.

I'm no stranger to BlackBerries. I liked using the Curve I had 2 years ago but gave it up when I left the company that was paying for it. It was really handy to have around.

1.) you can update the OS by downloading the OS file to your computer, and loading it via desktop manager to your phone. check the 9000 forum for the most recent OS. there are explanations on how to upgrade your OS all over the forum.....search.

2.) you cannot use the native push email or appworld or even some apps without a BIS data plan. you are restricted to wifi browsing only. the email setup icon only appears when your BIS data plan is detected and the proper service books are sent to the phone. no plan, no email.

3.) there is no way you can "hack" your prepaid sim to allow you to use your phone to its full potential.

bottom line is the phone is pretty much very hindered by not having a full data plan. theres little you can do.

If you mean tablet use only, eg. Micro tablet, then just addon the blackberry data plan and use BBSAK to shrink out everything with "phone", everything but the browser and what it depends on, remove the camera, video camera, etc.

It's possible, but you'll end up nuking the OS if you don't get it right the first few or more tries. Just letting you know. I am going to either repurpose my 9700 as a camera (shrink out bloody everything) or as a wifi browsing PDA that doesn't need a SIM, eg. Nothing but wifi browsing.

But circumventing BIS/carrier data is stealing. It can't be discussed here.

@dictoresno; so bottom line is that without a blackberry data plan then I'm SOL to tie the BB to my Gmail account? So I couldn't access Linked In, Facebook, etc over the wifi using those apps, I'd have to use the browser?

@rootbrian; Microtablet, that's a perfect word to describe what I'm looking to turn it into. But I'm not really interested in using it anywhere without a wi-fi connection, just turning it into a toy really. "wifi browsing" is all I'd really expect of it.

You're **** out of luck without the blackberry data plan. Wifi would mean the browser only, the youtube app would work, allowing you to post stuff, pending you have an account of your own/borrowed friend's account to use or a shared one amongst fellow bloggers. For a micro wifi tablet, you'd need an extended battery or two, easily found on ebay for $12 + free shipping. An option which is very greatful. MiRoamer also works with wifi, I can provide an OTA link too if you'd like.

No sport, you will actually have to pay something to do everything you want. Another post wanting something for nothing, they get so old. It's business, perhaps like you get paid for what you do??? Everyone would love to not have to pay anything to use their devices every month, but what's a girl to do in a capitalist society. Maybe over in Europe, find a nice socialist country that gives free everything.....Greece maybe.....nah, their broke....Italy....broke......but my heart so goes out.

You will be able to access your gmail. But, you will have to go thru wifi and download (free) either "Funambol" or "Logic Mail". With "Logic Mail" I can access my emails, store or save them, reply etc. I had Funambol loaded at first but stuck with LogicMail as it was much easier to set up and also I did not need two email apps on my BB. I did this both with my non provisioned bb8320 and bb9700 although, again, I only use wifi with NO data plan.

Don't listen to everyone here you CAN tweak a bb to run over wifi. First do this, unlock it to get calls/txts. You won't need the BIS for this. Next wait for the bb app world update that supports wifi(might be alrdy out) if not its on its way. You can access gmail on bb over wifi with push as well just look for the gmail download files here on crackberry since google just pulled support for it. After that you once again CAN browse but only using third party browsers over wifi which tbh your guna want over any os 5 browser cause its pretty dog poo. Other people here are correct In saying you cannot take the absolute fullest adavntage of a blackberry smartphone without accessing BIS BUT that dosent mean its not possible to use one without it. You just have to be resoureful.

So wrong on so many levels... LOL!

This has got to be the most off topic post ever. Apart from the fact that, YOU, as an American should not talk when it comes to being broke, and economy in general... but what does this mambo jumbo have anything to do with the OP's post?

    Exactly...
