I have found that filling up the AutoText feature with custom words helps with my speed and accuracy.

I can't type as fast as I can on my computer. Its easier to type on my iTouch than it is on my bold with a case. But I'd say anywhere around 45-50 wpm.

On the 9800 my speed has dropped a bit but on the 9000 and the 8900 I
regularly clocked in at 90+ wpm (error free). Full disclosure I type at 120+ wpm
    on a real keyboard.

None of this is germane to the OPs question though as I DO NOT TEXT
(some of you had to see that coming )

Makes me wonder how Barbara Blackburn would have done with a BlackBerry.
    She once clocked 212 wpm

AG, that's some serious typing speed. And error free! I couldn't imagine moving my thumbs that fast.

Trust me you can. Trick is to recognize when your index fingers need to be
involved. I'd be about as slow as a pregnant, three legged turtle if I only
    used my thumbs.

Practice and get a timed word game or two

I am 33-36WPM with one handed typing on my Torch, 35-40WPM on my Tour, 29-32WPM on my 9300

I've never done a speed test with 2 hands but I suspect I would be in the high 60's-low 70's on my Torch, and probably low 70's on my Tour.

wouldn't even guess on my 9300,

IF I got to practicing with 2 hands and was looking to set a record, I might get high 70's but I am impressed with that guy very well done!,

HOW the heck do you get your index finger involved on the BB?
Min are perched by the lock and mute buttons when I type.

( I just trying to type with my index finger on my BB 2 hands I can't even get to 40WPM!)

No. I mean with the phone. This is going to seem really odd and hard to
    picture:

My phone is held: four finger of left hand except thumb on the back, last
3 finger of the right hand on the back.

Now here is where it gets tricky, my left thumb only touches the first 4 left
column of keys, right thumb only the next three and right index finger the
last three column of keys on the right.

I have been doing this with full QWERTY PDA / cellphones forever. It works.
    Well, at least for me.

That was me using your technique to type "hey what's up"

That must take a good bit pf practice.

I should add that that was with a full keyboard in Portrait with a touch screen phone. That maybe makes a difference.

    You got mad skillz! Lol

@jusdis: I have been doing it that way so long it is second nature to me.
But it really not that much of a stretch. In touch typing only certain fingers
touch certain keys. I just kind of adapted it the small keyboard.

For what it's worth, I tried that on the virtual keyboard. It looked like Klingon.

If you want to increase your speed, become an auto-text power user. I have over 400 or the most commonly used English wrds abbreviated in auto-text, creating a personal shorthand. It saves me many keystrokes in every sentence. It's not just about typos and "special" words and phrases. I'll never own a phone without auto-text. It's much more powerful than predictive.
