I have Vodafone and am confused on how blackberry's work versus regular cell phones. If you turn off internet access on a blackberry, you cannot make phone calls or text messages. Why is this? Does their internet function on a different frequency? Can anyone explain how a blackberry works?

That is not correct. You can turn off data and still make calls and receive SMS messages. You probably did it wrong. Go into network connections, mobile network, and you can turn off data there.
