This is not a rehash of the threads on the current quarter earnings report but a question
    I need help understanding.

How exactly does after-market trading work?
What relationship does A M trading have on the closing bell stock price?
What relationship does A M trading have on the opening bell (next day) stock price?

RIM closed at $9.13. The A M price currently sits at $7.71. I get the NASDAQ close
but I have no idea what effect the A M price has on the overall value of a given stock?

    Any insight?

simple. AM trading has no bearing on the closing or opening price of a stock. The change in AM price is based on the closing price. The change in opening price is also based on the closing price. So, RIMM closed at $9.13. It traded down to $7.86 in AM trading. It wil begin trading again in the morning at a pre-market price, which will also be marked down from closing price, and wherever it trades at 9:30 AM will be the opening price.
