I was on the phone with RIM tech support today, and the tech said "Bizzz" whereas I've always pronounced it as "Bee-eye-es".

So you never say "rim"? You always say R - I - M, or Research In Motion? Acronyms are "said" all the time. Nothing stupid about it.

I always pronounce acronyms when they're pronounceable. ATI=at-ee, BIS=biss, BES=bess, NICU=neekoo. And yet AMD and ICU are spelled out as the letters. I guess I'm inconsistent.

+1. How many people say G - U - I? Everybody pronounces "GUI" as "gooey".

I can verify that the "RIM types" pronounce BES and BIS as a word, but I've always pronounced both as individual initials.

so how do you pronounce "IBM"? ( i agree, GUI is "gooey". and RIM is "rim", but BIS and BES seem more suited to being pronounced as individual letters)

Interesting. My textbook Network+ Guide to Networks, Fifth Edition by Tamara Dean states, "A GUI (graphical user interface; pronounced "gooey") is a pictorial representation of computer functions that, in the case of NOSs, enables administrators to manage files, users, groups, security, printers, and so on."

    Big
    Ugly
    Fat
    Friends
    Eating
    Together

It's pronounced 'biz' like business, at least in the IT field. The whole point of using an acronym or IT buzz word is so you don't waste time saying the whole thing. One syllable vs. three. I would argue that pronouncing it as 'biz' is the opposite of stupid.

glad that's settled... NOT! perhaps in the interest of world harmony we can agree to disagree with those who choose not to say "BIS" in the same fashion as we ourselves choose to say it. Now back to life...

I have fun with this kind of stuff. In my line of work, there's a part we use all the time called an "old work box." Sometimes I'll say to my friend, "Hey, pass me an o.w.b!" It drives him crazy because saying o.w.b. is five syllables and takes longer to say than saying out the complete words themselves which only requires saying three syllables. Needless to say, I do it on purpose, lol.

I suspect that users who are not IT folks probably spell out the letters. IT people have always used tons of acronyms. We usually need to say the entire words that the acronyms stand for when explaining things to folks who are not geeks, and then explain what those words mean. For instance, I will refer to a NIC (pronounced nick), but if I am talking to a regular user, I'll say "network interface card" and then tell him what is does if it needs troubleshooting.

Didn't say that's how the world says it. Just me. But I have heard quite a few people say it both ways.

I have NEVER heard anyone say DOS like D-O-S though.

    I believe you.

As I mentioned in a previous post, those of us in IT always use "geek speak". Sometimes it is important for us to remember that not everybody else knows what our "geek speak" means, and we need to explain things to folks.
