I have gotten rid of my iphone 6 and upgraded to a blackberry classic. alot of my friends cant message me because their phones are still recognizing me as an iphone and trying to send imessages to me,which dont go through. Is there a setting on my blackberry or any other suggestions?

You need to turn off imessage

I'd also call Apple and have them unregister it for you. Takes literally about 2 minutes.

That's not necessary. Apple's link, as posted by zocster above, will let you do it virtually instantly by yourself - unlike the bad old days when it took 30 days to de-register, or the even worse days when you couldn't de-register.

Remember that once you de register, your friend will also have to delete their conversation history with you.
