The common wisdom is to turn off any radios you don't need to conserve battery. However I have noticed on many occasions where my Bold discharges faster with WIFI off than with it on. Could it be that the wifi signal takes less power than 3G (maybe depending on where you are in relation to a tower) and that the phone uses wifi for housekeeping stuff rather than 3G?
