If so what were the voice/data charges or is it too expensive. I'm heading over there in several months. Wondering if I should take mine or just leave it at home.

a friend of mine is over there right now (Camp Bucca) I guess the signal comes from Kuwait most of the time. She doesn't use it for voice, i guess the charges would've been ridiculous, but she can text about 75% of the time. The signal where she's at isn't that reliable.
She's using the 8830 World Edition from Verizon
good luck and come home safe...
Probably better off getting a prepaid phone or something over there if you are just going to use it for voice.
God Bless you for Going to Iraq and serving our great country but with all due respect i would leave the blackberry home and watch out for IED's
Last thing we need is one of our own stepping on a landmine because their to busy reading the crackberry blogs.
Haha! Thanks, or they might try to take my BB hostage and negotiate something for it.
I called ATT, no discounts avalible for military over there. It would be 2.49 a minute. Or 69 a month for unlimited data only. 10 bucks more to get 100 text messages. And no tethering over there either.
I can put my plan on hold for up to 18 months so I think I'll do that instead. With the money I save putting it on hold, I can get the latest and greatest BB model when I come back.

Just left recently...charges will probably more than worth the trouble. You'll have the ability to purchase a SIM Card there in Iraq using Iraqna towers. You can then use your BB as your primary phone however no data only voice and SMS.
Great info, thanks. I'll take my BB with me then.
Good luck and god bless bro..make sure you come home safe, and send some of my boys back while you're over there!

Unlock your phone and use a local sim card.

well they have Phones over there that you can use that take sim Chips the have towers in Iraq but they are so so most all Iraqi have a cell now but the tie it takes to walk around anf get a singal. I mean I guess if thats what you want take it but me it not that big of a deal and we had a sat phone that we could use so it was never that big of a deal for me to use a phone.
Thanks everyone! I'm going to end up having the phone on me anyways. Leaving Hawaii for training prior to Iraq and we aren't going back to Hawaii. I'll figure everything out once i'm there.
Thanks again.
Stay safe and be careful! Good info as my brother may be heading over and was also wondering. We are always praying our soldiers come home safe!
Can anyone suggest a great case to use to block the sand while mkelly003 is there? I would hate to see that device's life shortened due to sand. Good luck.
Otter Box, is a great case,, I have one they are great especially for the money.
I am in Iraq, in ALi air base, near Basra and the coverage here is wretched,, I plan to have my service put on hold until i return. I cannot call or send nor recieve sms messages.
I served 2 tours in Iraq in the usmc and we were forbid from taking our cells because of IED's. I would leave it behind. Your mind is going to be elsewhere anyway.

How widely available is Wi-Fi in the secure areas?
Unlicensed Mobile Access means unlimited voice and data over the internet, not the local cell network.
