how long is the long time?
Well, that all depends on the connection you got to the internet. To give you an idea, my very detailed map of the Greater Toronto Area (at zoom level 16) will take up about 1GB of space on your memory card.

So, if you are downloading at 300 kb/s, then that will take you about an hour, if on the other hand, you are downloading at 100 kb/s, it will take 3 times as long.

I know that in earlier version of gMapMaker, even after it had finished downloading the entire map, and all progress bars were at 100%, it would not present you with a Done button.

What I am trying to say is that once your progress bars all hit 100%, it has finished downloading, even though you may not see a Done button pop-up. In that case, you can press Cancel, and all of your files and folders should be in you MGMapsCache folder.

I hope that helps, like F2 pointed out, some operating systems will have a hard time transferring a lot of small files through a USB connection, so before you commit, you may want to try to experiment with a small, manageable map size.

I've pulled the "plug" more than once. I really don't know what is normal but I've also had it going and going. I think maybe trying to get too many maps or too much detail (zoom levels) just overwhelms the system. Also, it has also overwhelmed Vista in my case (discussed above in thread). Where the thousands of files were just too many.

In other words, I don't know the answer but it takes a long time.

yeah you are right, a big area with detail takes a long time so i did one city and it was done in 10 min!!

There's a way to build an offline database of search terms, however, I am not familiar with it. I promised myself I'll get around to learning it sometime, but I have about a million other things that I'd like to do

Head over to the MGMaps forums. This is where I learned pretty much everything that I needed to write this tutorial.

    Mobile GMaps :: Index

By the way, if you do get it working, please share with us.

    Here's what to do ...

Menu - Settings - GPS - Start GPS Navigation

    then

Menu - Settings - GPS - Mobile Tracking ON

    then

Menu - Settings - GPS - Setup - Mobile Tracking - (make sure the Move Map check mark box is ticked on)

Now ... you should have MGMaps follow your progress

I have a question how do i get driving directions on the Gmaps. I tried the offline version and it said i don't have the database built. Currently the way maps is working right now is that when i am using it will show me on which road i am driving but i want to be able to get directions from Point A to point B. Any idea how to do it.

Supposedly it is sold for the current device. It might be possible that they will relent but maybe not.

    Great Job Sonni!

OK Ive made it to the last post..

To the viewers if your like me and have set and toggled everything the exact way sonni has said and still no gps found through gmaps....

Click the link under Sonnis Posts.. download that and go through Desktop Manager...

Glad to help as Ive spent 6 hours trying to figure it out..

lol it was there the whole time! Just take his version... load it in BB desktop manager...

    REady?

theres a lil button to check on this new version... that the other version didnt have... that would be...

    drum roll!!!!

settings ... GPS..... Internal GPS... and voilia AT THE BOTTOM...............check- turn on during start up!!!!!

(dunno what version I have previous to sonnis but no check box like this.. and no gps on the app, only on the bb)

although... like the other guy said on here the OTA version also could have been the problem..

just take sonnis version in the link.... trust me.

also.. if you download his mega map pack.. just drop the 6 folder and the cache.conf... into the MGMapsCache ( you made at the root of your sdcard)

power up gmaps.. and hit 0 till g**gle maps shows up.. then zoom to 200km..
Get all excited and see the map...

Cause really if your a world wide traveller who can goto every city on this planet...and you need it in detail... im pretty sure ya dont need a free gps LOL!... just do MGMapsCache/GoogleMap_6 and the cache.conf ..

as an example.. then find your own cities and streets.

    to check it out first.

..... also is it a violation somewhere to have a Map downloads forum? Cause its kinda funny when 7-8 people are all doing the very same cities...

Anyone have Toronto detailed? they put on MU? ontario would be great too.

    thanks.

    thats it im goin driving!..

    Thanks guys.. great thread!

    Hi 0o0o0,

I am glad you got MGMaps to work on your blackberry. I am not sure if it would be a violation to have a map download forum, but keep in mind, that when you get to zoom level 16 maps, the file sizes are quite large, for download and UPLOAD.

What I suggest you do, is start off with the 1-6 zoom level pack that I put together, and then add zoom level 7- ??? according to your specific address.

The next goal is to have a functionning offline search capability, but that may have to wait a few weeks before I get it up and running on the blackberry.

Yep just figured that out when i was looking for my las vegas maps.. and im in the east.. lol

Your pack is a must to completely install.. or at least the top 3 low number folders.

Vegas maps on G---gle are pretty sweet.. your usual road maps.. but they show casino structures.. at 17 18.. and its a quick download and load too.. just the city.

Definate must have... Hybrid Walt Disney World Fl.

this app is great. You could track your family in the park... through sms.. while your at the other end. Way better then describing it over cell conversation.

*** Note do not download G---gle maps from the net from your phone if you have no data package, or mgmaps..

use sonnis link and desktop manager for bb.

I got a message stating i owe $10 !!!!!! from my service provider... just from downloading both from the phone. Im not cheap by anymeans $10 isnt a big deal.. but when you think of a months internet for computer at $35..70gig max and see you downloaded 4 mins worth of 2 files from your phone.. for $10. yikes.

Sonni you do know theres apps on the net that will BULK change your tiles to Hidden.. individually doing it.. man that would be tedious.

Also looking into tricks for sdcard transfer.. im thinking.. compressing a folder on the computer.. transferring to sdcard then uncompressing in the sdcard shaves at least 20% time. Still looking for an easier compression out there then zip rar and tar. maybe this z7 or whatever.

Yup, in Windows just select the MGMapsCache folder, right click on it, go to Properties, check the Hidden box, click Apply, confirm that you want it to apply to folder, subfolder, and files, and ... wait

Also looking into tricks for sdcard transfer..
If you scroll up a few posts, I described a way to transfer the files without invoking Vista's Window Explorer, but intead, to do it through the command prompt using DOS commands. Check it out, it should be a little faster.

Sonni, I havent checked yet but does this program have times? esitmated times of arrival?

For GPS of anykind the map sure is great, but my only ever usefullness of gps because i know most of the streets and areas and how to get to them myself.

the most usefull thing about gps to me is.. im always late lol..

Although since using gps i can tell before i leave my house if its worth driving somewhere or not... like say a store closes in 30 mins.. i have 25mins est on the gps.. i can tell hitting lights.. its not even worth leaving.

or everyones done this.. your at a bar, it sucks.. ( you have a designated driver) but the bar your at bites.. its 20mins till last call... and the other bar you want to goto is 12mins away.. factor in line up or not.. you COULD DO IT!...so your waiting for someone to finish up their drink.. thats 3-4 mins past.. your about to leave the bar... you have 12mins still to get there.. but last call is in 14 mins.. 2 mins to get to your car and leave...So instead of leaving and getting shut out.. while you were perfectly fine where you first were..

you ace another 2 rounds lol..

Best is telling a date... you'll be there in.. oh lets see.. 17mins.. and your DEAD ON!.. nerd. but anyhow..

So does this program have est time of arrivals?
    Thanks.

Nope, unfortunately it doesn't have estimated time of arrival , but it does display the files that are being copied, so you can monitor what proportion of files have been transferred.

    407mb so far 3 - 10 days...... it takes 1 hour per folder 1,2,3,4,.....

    96 hours. yikes.

    4x write 4gb sdhc card. $16bucks.

Heres a question.. lol can an sdcard get hot.. catch on fire, burn up? just askin been too afraid to leave on over night..

Giving MGMaps a spin at the moment.
Version is the one off sonni's signature on 8900.

My GPS is up and running, gets my location and everything, but i can't get the thing to load any maps.
To clarify, i'm talking about streaming maps, not stored on a card.
Yahoo, Google and crucially Openstreetmaps are all blank with the "zoom out" tile showing.

I'm guessing it's something to do with permissions but for the life of me i can't figure it out.
    Any ideas?

Try to enable all the maps that are offered, then once your GPS location is locked in, cycle through them by pressing zero.

Got it to work by messing with what to append on the HTTP requests.
    4th option did it.

Unfortunately it's not much use to me anyway.
I use GoogleMaps in the UK for searching and was hoping i'd be able to use this to search OpenStreetMaps since that's the only place i know of with street names for Cyprus (where i spend a good chunk of my year).
Apparently the search function only uses GoogleMaps so no dice.

I normally use Trekbuddy for map-only, off network GPS, might give this one a go with offline maps too, see which one i like better, although i am quite fond of Trekbuddy's non-map features (compass, custom UI etc).

What a wonderful thread! Was wondering how I was going to use GPS in Europe - didn't want to also have to take my old WinMobile PDA with TomTom. SK, thank you for all your wonderful info!

Quick question: I'm guessing from the FAT16/32 comments that there would be no problem transferring data between microSD cards? Reason I ask is I currently have a 2GB card, but have a 16GB on order. I'd like to download the program and start working on maps now, before it arrives. I presume I can just copy between the cards via my computer?

If I want to use xcopy to do the copy faster, what would be that command?

Thanks to sonni, I got this to work on my 8120. However, I'm having an issue with trying to add more zoom levels/maps - specifically, with the GMap Maker program.

I install it, but I can't run it. It gives me this error message:

To run this application, you first must install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework: v2.0.50727
Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET Framework

Can anyone help? Right now I can get route directions, but I'd like a more detailed map/zoom for anywhere in California that I might end up driving to one day.
