I have been reading, but not much of an update here or there. I have updated to the Verizon .175, which I thought allowed and unlocked the GPS. However, when I click Maps Icon, it brings up a pop up dialogue that says "Maps is disabled". Just asking if anyone has been able to restore the GPS functionality.

I have used an hybrid OS, a stock OS, and even reverted back to the OS that was on the device when I got it. I even had to remove the it policy.

OS 4.5 unlocks the internal GPS for BBMaps. I've been told it works for Bing as well, but can't test it. I haven't read anywhere that Verizon has generally unlocked the GPS.

I upgraded to OS4.5.175 on my Verizon 8830 and now my GPS works. I had some other issues with the "Device Media Processor is busy" but that was resolved by wiping the memory and restoring the essential data.

What apps does it work with? Is Google Maps using the internal GPS? If you get your location to within 10-m, then Google is using the internal GPS. If your location is to 1400-m or so, then Google is not using the internal GPS.

Turned on the GPS on Verizon 8830 about 6 months ago. Have never been able to get any other map or location function to use the GPS (have tried 4 or 5). Only BB Maps uses it. Google maps is using the cell phone towers.

That's the normal situation with older Verizon devices that have the assisted GPS chip. I have been told the Bing can use the GPS, but I no longer have an 8830 to try it. If you'd care to try it and report back, I'd appreciate it.

Only BB maps work. Non of 3rd party GPS app will work.

Since I posted my question re Bing on 1/25, two 8830 users have confirmed that Bing does work, albeit slowly, with the Verizon 8830 running OS 4.5.

VZW 8330, 8703 and 8830 have AGPS, they allrequire assisted data (PDE) for GPS to work. VZW only offers PDE data to those paid GPA apps, BB Maps and probably Bing PDE data under agreement.

New VZW BBs no longer need PDE data, so you can get GPS using 3rs party app. This is alos true for Us Cellular.
