A GPS (or puck) should be a one-time purchase. It is basically a third-party accessory that provides GPS capabilities by linking to your 8120 via bluetooth.

Now, the GPS software can be free (like Amaze), subscription or one-time purchase too.

I use the Freedom GPS puck.

TeleNav is a subscription service, so you can pay a monthly fee or pay a smaller amount to use it on the fly.

Most of the major BB GPS software companies sell pucks. TeleNav and Garmin sell pucks. Freedom Keychain is very popular, and Holux pucks are an option too.
