    The RIM Google Talk application is pretty good for instant messaging. Will Google ever come out with an actual desktop client for this messenger, or will it always have to be used with the browser (gmail open) when at the pc?

    If you have a gmail or corporate account (Google) then you can download it. Integrated with the browser or as a stand alone.

    Google Chat - Chat with family and friends

    Additionally, many 3rd party All-in-one instant messengers (Trillian etc..) support google talk.
