Downloading it now!! I love it!!
thanks for the notice im downloading it right now
The Transit option is very interesting. Seems to have found the bus route near my home!!!!
Is there a trick I need to do in order to download it? I go to the site and follow the instructions but no download link comes up.
Are you going to Google with the Blackberry Browser, not with your PC? GMM is an OTA download only. And you have to use the BB browser for OTA d/l, not opera mini.
I try to go to google.com/gmm but i keep going in circles. it asks for number I enter it then get text saying go to google.com/gmm.
Go to Google using the BB browser in blackberry emulation mode.
When you get to Google, scroll down to the line "Gmail, Maps, & more...."
Click that.
Select "Maps (Download)"
If you are getting prompted for a phone number, there is something wrong. Google is not recognizing your device as a blackberry.
If I leave it open on my 8830 my memory runs down like the gas gauge on an Indy Car. What's up with the huge memory leak Google?!?!?
Running OS 4.2.2.196 on Verizon 8830WE. I did a battery pull and started with File Free: 20 679 789. I started GMM 2.2.0 and left the phone undisturbed. I left wireless on, so emails were coming in, but I answered/deleted them from my laptop, so they didn't accumulate in the Messages folder. Here are my results from a 5-hr test:
Start: 20 679 789
Hr 1: 20 633 677
Hr 2: 20 634 753
Hr 3: 20 625 269
Hr 4: 20 552 389 (phone calls between Hr 4 and Hr 5)
Hr 5: 20 666 133
I thought I was detecting a problem with the relatively large drop from Hr 3 to Hr 4, but it all came back in Hr 5. I had to take several phone calls between Hr 4 and Hr 5. Do you think that could've recovered the memory? What size drop over what time period did you see?
I haven't tracked it over a long time, but I can watch it in a 5 minute timeframe and it keeps dropping. Not huge amount of MB, but definatly kb is size. If I go into GMM and under Help and watch the memory sizes there, I can see the free memory drop on it as well live. Does yours constantly keep decreasing?
Results from a 5-minute test. I didn't do a battery pull to start. I did use a stopwatch and recorded the free memory every minute for 5 minutes.
Start: 33 488/38 796 KB
Min 1: 33 581
Min 2: 33 586
Min 3: 33 003
Min 4: 32 234
Min 5: 33 682
Over a 5 minute period, it increased slightly for two minutes, dropped substantially for two, then came back to more free memory than when I started. I'm not sure that's conclusive of anything.
Ah here was my problem. my BB browser was set to netscape emulation. The download went fine after I changed it. Thanks for the tips.:)using the BB browser in blackberry emulation mode.

Is it just me or GPS doesn't work on Google Maps?
It works with my external puck. I'm posting via wapforums and can't see your carrier. It won't work with the internal GPS on Verizon phones.
Be sure you have the permissions set to "allow" and the GPS device selected.
If you are using an external GPS, there are other issues that I won't go into unless you need me to.

Hi Jeff
I'm with VODAFONE UK. HOw do I change permissions?
Thanks
Options/Advanced Options/Applications
Select Google
Menu/Edit Permissions/
You can set all three to "Allow"

All permissions are already set to "allowed" and internal GPS is selected. My Google Maps still does not show GPS in the menu. hmmmmm
My Google Maps doesn't have GPS on the menu, either. I have to use BBMaps to "Start GPS Navigation," then switch to Google Maps. This is a known issue with external GPS users. I haven't heard anybody using internal GPS that had to do it. Try it. Be sure you have the GPS source set correctly in BBMaps and see if BBMaps can start the GPS, then leave it running in the background and run Google Maps.
Is the little flashing blue dot on Google Map = GPS location?
Yes. Sounds like you're getting it to work. If it's a flashing blue dot, it's using GPS data. If you press '0', it should give your location accuracy as 3-m or so. If it's a blue circle, you're triangulating a position from cell towers. In this case, your accuracy can be 5000-m.
If you move, the blue dot will have an arrow that indicates direction of travel. Google Maps don't have the option to show route as up, only North up.
Thanks for the notice
Thanks Jeff. It's all working good. I didn't even have any problem since the beginning, I just didn't know that "My location" = GPS, lol. Love the flashing blue dots. It's pretty accurate.
Great! I'm really glad you didn't have to use BBMaps. So far as I know, that work-around is only required for external GPS users. I was concerned you might be an inexplicable exception, or the first of a whole bunch of new occurrences of the problem.
I wish Google Maps could rotate for direction of travel Up. That's their only flaw, compared to BBMaps. Their level of detail is excellent.
2.2.0 seems to not update the position as frequently as the previous version.
Previously, when driving, the position pretty much kept up with the car location (much like a car nav. system. With 2.2.0 it only seems to update ~ every 5 seconds.
Not very useful when trying to locate a turning! You can be way past before it updates.
