Hey audit, you ever see the google applications updater, you just download it and run it and it tells you when their are new versions available....I know it exists, but every link I go to never produces finding the application...I think it's just a US thing and not available to Canadians?
Get ready VZW people, it NOW works with your Internal GPS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very cool, but still not internal GPS. Read the help on "My Location" from within Google Maps. If the phone doesn't have a GPS device, it's using cell towers and Google's servers to approximate your location. As far as VZW is concerned, our 8830s don't have internal GPS, so it's defaulted to the cell tower method.
For me, it's off by far enough to be useless--at least at my office. My actual location isn't even inside the light blue circle, and it jumps around randomly to three different locations, all of which are at least a quarter mile from where I am.
I think I'll still have to go with a bluetooth GPS puck.
That is correct, it does use cell tower triangulation. I turned the GPS off on my 8703e and it still showed my general whereabouts. I have yet to hop in the car to see if it'll move the map while I travel.
The aGPS integration will come in very handy. Now I no longer have to set my current location when using Google maps to search for restaurants around me for example.
I removed it off my 8310 with built in GPS. The damn thing had me 800 meters off and that was when I was outside with a clear view of the sky. I did battery pulls, refresh of the GPS, etc and still couldn't get any closer.
I've installed it, waited for triangulation to work for like 30 minutes (still finding location), quit, restarted, pulled battery, restarted, and STILL finding location. WTF? is this supposed to work with my 8830 or not? PS, I still don't have VZN, and I never will, so NO GPS ENABLED at the moment. does that matter? i don't think so
I just tried it on my 8130 and I only get the triangulation method. Since I'm in Manhattan, that's mostly useless, because the "approximate" circle encompasses a good stretch of lower Manhattan.
i installed GMM 2.0.0 on my 8130, did a soft reset, then ran the app. the my location feature is WAY off. i've tried it inside my office and outside with a clear view to the sky. i've also tried it with GPS set to "911 only" and "location on". which shouldn't make a difference, because VZW has crippled the GPS, so the my location feature is using triangulation.
i'm only getting the blue dot with the light blue circle around it. which according to the google site, indicates there is some uncertainty about my location. my location isn't even inside the light blue circle.
anyone have any better luck? i know this is a beta version, but it's not even usable right now. is there possibly anything VZW would need to do to make this work better? firmware update?
maybe they could unlock the autonomous GPS capabilities and we wouldn't be having this conversation. now i'm dreaming...
I just downloaded it - it's giving me two different (wrong) locations every few seconds. The first position is about two miles away; the second is just within the ring.
It seems to be working decently for me. It's off by about 4 blocks ... but then you cant really expect it to do better than that. I am well within the blue circle that it draws.
Works great for me. After zooming in the blue dot was about 15 feet away from where I was standing. The app is much more refined than the last version. Me likey...

it's amazing what happens when the autonomous GPS is actually functioning like RIM intended...
