That's so true.

This data-hogging monster practically owns the internet now. Is there a website that does NOT display Google Ads, or apply doubleclick.net / Google Analytics tracking?

This in the hands of a fascist government (global or not), and all the data we're leaving in the cloud, should give us an at least slightly concerned feeling about our democracy, sovereignty and self-governance. And who knows "what, when, why" about us.

I do not mean to derail the thread into the political, but this company's power concentration has more widespread implications than meets the eye or than we first might or like to admit.

Yup. We are living in a data-centric world. A lot of good can be done with data also, it doesn't have to be all bad. I give credit to them for being forward thinking.

I don't think so. All we know it's about the ecosystem (we've been told enough times here on CB!), and people are now deeply entrenched. After all, once you're with Gmail, you don't want to change your primary address that all your friends and partners have.... right?

I actually switched to outlook and it was pretty easy, but for others they may not want to. Why should they if they are happy? Googles timing was perfect, and it has paid off.

Facebook is about the only other company that has that depth of knowledge of aggregate tastes and opinions. Guess what they are making beaucoup advertising dollars off of it too and Google is worried.

Ever heard of Amazon? eBay? PayPal? Your bank(s) and credit card company(s)? Use a loyalty card anywhere, or give out your phone number when you buy things?

I think you'd be surprised to know how much a whole lot of companies know about you.
