forcing the browser to ues WiFi
- How can I force the Torch browser to use WiFi if available ?
I tried to uncheck the "Mobile network" mark from network connections, but still the browsers was using the 3G data plan !!!!
I have Mobile Data Alerter , giving me worning that the usage exceeded 3 MB. Also I was seeing an arrow going up fast in the corner of the home screen . This proves that the 3G was used. Right ?
The browser of the Torch does not have the option found on the 8520 to choose Hotspot browser .
Thanks for help .12-22-10 06:29 AMLike 0 - In OS6 if youre connected to wifi, it should automatically use wifi over the mobile connection. To check when connected over wifi go to whatismyip.com and see if the ip is for your isp and not the carriers. To see what the carriers is just do the same thing with wifi off.12-22-10 08:01 AMLike 0
- If you turned "Mobile Network" off you certainly are not using your data plan(3G network), since turning that option off turns the phones antenna off. The little arrows in the corner are sending and receiving data indicators, they are present regardless of whether your on network data or wifi.
3mb of data is not a lot of data to use, if you had said 3gb then it might be a concern. What is your data plan with vodafone? I typically use around 4gb of data a month and that's with roughly 4 hours of streaming from yesterberry every day of the week.12-22-10 08:09 AMLike 0 - Yeah that's not a huge amount of data. I was thinking more along the lines of what we have in the states with AT&T, smallest plan is 200mb of data.12-22-10 08:16 AMLike 0
- What version of OS 6 are you using? I have noticed when connected to wifi the 3G icon is replaced with the wifi strenght symbol.

It highlights the radio currently being used if you open the application up. I just confirmed that when connected to the wi-fi router it shows as such. Turn wi-fi off and it bounced back to my Home carrier, turned the network off and wi-fi back on and it bounced back to my wi-fi router.12-22-10 11:06 AMLike 0
- The 3G network handles voice and data, so even if you turn data services off, you should still see the 3G inidcator (if within a 3G coverage area) to show that you are still connected to voice and SMS services. As others have said, OS 6 gives WiFi priority over celluar data by default if it's connected.
And +1 for Mobile Data Alerter - awesome app, especially for roaming.

1. The 4-dot BB logo jumps from being beside 3G to being beside the WiFi logo.
2. The WiFi logo switches from all grey to at least the bottom being white.
3. BEST: In your Manage Connections app, the lowest item is Service Status. Select this to a bunch of great info summarized. As Shansmi mentioned, if you're on WiFi it will say WiFi beside the BIS and the BES Connections. Under WiFi Network, you'll the name of your current WiFi network. (Don't worry under Type if it says Not Connected.)m.seif likes this.12-23-10 05:55 PMLike 1 - Thank you elite1 .
I cud not verify your points 1&2 , they did not happen to me, but 3 yes. It was saying under service status that BIS coneection WiFi.
However, for the data alerter, and although in its configuration, you can specify the warning limits, but the oonly counter you see when you open the program is for the 3G limits you put in the configuration also.
This counter accumalte whether you are using 3G or WiFi.
Is there any better program for the data alert that clearly measure WiFi and 3 G ?

Can you please take a screenshot of Mobile Data Alerter while you are connected to WiFi and post the screenshot here?

ZonaSnap: CB Superstore - Download ZonaSnap12-24-10 06:16 AMLike 0 - m.self - I think you must have the wrong version of Mobile Data Alerter installed. My friend downloaded the wrong one and she could only see 2 instead of 3 data buckets. If you have the correct device version should see:
1: Roaming
2: Home (cell network)
3: WiFi
If you don't have 3, try re-installing a different version. Here is a link for a direct OTA download from your device. Make sure you choose the top option that is for devices running OS 4.7 and higher:

You can only install it via your desktop if you have some specific 3rd-party desktop software; but I really don't recommend that route for a novice.
Anytime you see the .jad file extension that means it is OTA only. There are a few other OTA file extensions too, like .jar, but jad is by far the most common now.12-24-10 03:51 PMLike 0 - m.self - I think you must have the wrong version of Mobile Data Alerter installed. @m.seif:
Just download it from App World. Here's the link:
BlackBerry App World - e-office Mobile Data Alerter - trial
You can click that from your BB's Browser and it will open App World to the right page, or go there from your PC and it will have a barcode you can scan off the monitor with your BB. (Open App World, click MENU, select Scan a Barcode.)
I believe it's the current version in App World: 310.907.171.758
(Maybe Seaners or someone will confirm version is the same...)
If an app is free and available from App World, you might as well download it from there. App World is the only service that notifies you of upgrades to your free apps.m.seif likes this.12-24-10 05:03 PMLike 1 - Originally Posted by elite1I believe it's the current version in App World: 310.907.171.758

Thank you both very much for your help. I did as you told and now I have the new version working with the WiFi.
It shows clearly that the WiFi counter is the one working as long as there is nearby router.
Also in the service status , it shows BIS connection via the WiFi.
Thank you again12-25-10 04:35 AMLike 0 - @m.self:
