I've been looking for a decent set of earbuds having media control buttons and a mic to use it with my 9800. You can find tons of ear-canal models on the market and slightly less earbud types but only for the iphone. Not a single one that is compatible with BB.

so to wrap it up
- earbud type, not in-ear / ear canal
- a mic and working multimedia control keys

Any suggestions?

What about something like this?

Then you can use whatever headphones suit and if the headphones break you don't have to throw the whole unit.
