I save everything to gmail. But how do I go straight into my contacts app and just download a contact's picture from there to save on my phone.

I don't think that's possible. I think you'll need to ask your contact to send you the picture.

See what happens when you drag down 'Settings' (when in Contacts) and tick the little box where it says:
"Search for contact details
Use Cloud Services to find more info about the contacts that you add to the Contacts app".
(Personally I have no idea).
