I've had my phone for a few months now after starting my own contract and was wondering how many people wait until they're eligible to upgrade, add a line, or pay full retail for a new phone.

well i usually can get an upgrade after 6 months into a contract for an extra 18.00 as an early upgrade free and get the phone at discount...
Oh I forgot to add "purchase elsewhere".
Wow...lucky...
How do you go about doing this?
i walk into my local att store, im also on a premier acct
I wait until the upgrade, unless it's something I must have. Keeping this Storm2 until the Storm4 comes out.
I will be waiting for my upgrade this time. But in the past I haven't. I had 8 phones last year (3 different carriers) and this year I have already had 5. So I am sticking with my Tour until my upgrade in February 2011 - hopefully.
Geez...
How much money did you lose doing that? When I was on my mom's plan, I tried out like 3 or 4 phones before I could finally decide which I wanted and I ended up losing like $500.:(
I usually get early upgrades. But make up for it with my monthly bill.

Usually wait for my upgrade and I get the phone from wirefly.com
Someone I know used her upgrade to get me the 9700 which was free on there.
Good place to check now and then because the prices fluctuate.
I would use those sites but prefer buying from the carriers themselves even if I'm spending more money. I'll check out wirefly when I upgrade in a year or so.
Usually full retail...sorta.
I tend to wait a year before upgrading. I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon. Of course, I said that when I got my 8900, and I ended up going to the 9700.
Full retail! Rogers is not so comprenhensive :(
I have to wait til i have an upgrade the wife says so.
Wirefly or LetsTalk. Both are authorized resellers so the full warranty is in effect
and if one wishes you can also add insurance (I never insure phones). My 8900
from Wirefly was $7.00 and free shipping.
What I have never done and will NEVER do is pay full retail for a phone.
I added the last two options for you :)
But you still need upgrades to go through authorized resellers. They won't sell the phones free w/o contract.
Only way I'd pay full retail for a phone is if I want it badly AND I get around at least half of the money as a gift so I'd only end up paying like $300.
Well yeah mang, of course you need to be eligible. If they gave phones for
free without a contract they'd be more like WireFlyAwayBankrupt.com :p
then i'd guess stealing counts lol
I either wait until my upgrade is available or use the upgrade on one of my family members' lines.
Yep. Or in this past case 5 1/2 months in. I got an "exception upgrade". It seems that when you pay ~$100/mo AT&T is eager to keep you. The cost with the exception upgrade was $379 and I got a $100 rebate plus a $250 account credit. I have found that when you call into cust service to ask about it, it helps to choose the "cancel service" option. Those reps have much greater leeway in what they'll offer you. Just my $.02.....
Upgrade and ebay works fine by me
