I was glad to get a notification today from the Amazon App Store that Netflix had an update available. I gladly updated it. Immediately when I opened it, I had a long process swirl. Then I got an error that Google Services was not detected. Of course it still works fine, but it's now an extra hassle and a reminder that we are not using a native app. This updated added nothing as far as I can tell other than a Google Services request. It is version 3.9. I would stay away from it.

Strange that an Amazon App is asking for Google Services.... must have slipped through.

I've been using the Netflix I installed via SNAP... I'm make sure I don't update it.

Sounds like a dodgy update was given to Amazon, after all they don't have access to Google services any more than BlackBerry users do.

If the app, any app is working fine then never update it. I've updated apps in the past only to find in app advertising as the only update in android apps. Not worth it if it's working fine

Lesson learned. I always welcome improvements to cast movies to my Roku 3 via Playon. I should have been happy with how I had it because Playon did work.

Using Google Play Services to shut out and make life difficult for non-OHA manufacturers is a brilliant strategy on Google's part. The ever dreadful update that breaks a working non-native app problem bites.

Yes, but it is NOT mandatory to use google services for any app. If the developer wants they can build apps using only android APIs. But for certain tasks and features, using Google services API is very easy to do and pretty straightforward.

Look in your downloads... you might still have the older Netflix APK.

But yeah this is going to become more common....

Have to wonder if Netflix pulls this from Amazon and fixes it... or just puts the older version back.

I'm using 3.9.1 build 4105 with no Google hassle. Also, not being offered an update on either Google or Amazon. I didn't catch the OP's BlackBerry model. I wonder if that makes a difference in what version is offered/downloaded?

I always use Amazon first. They give update notifications and they do no have apps that require Google Services.

A surprising amount of apps still ask for Google services on the Amazon Appstore. I used to have a list tracking them but my computer ate it lol.

Interesting. I now have the APK for 3.8.3 just in case. I will try it again. I did notify them. However I would be surprised if they reacted that quickly.

Exactly. I remember reading a very thorough article on ars technica on how Google improved parts of Android OS that used to be good in AOSP and stuck those improvements as part of Google Play Services add on. Those improvements are closed source. Google Play Services is not mandatory, but Google did all they could to entice devs to depend on it. That is brilliant. Google can say Android is open source platform by pointing to AOSP and and "restrict" the use of Android platform at the same time.

I was getting the Google Services has stopped message for a while. I deleted the Netflix app I got from Snap and installed the Amazon version but was still getting the pop-up. I thought maybe it was something futzed up in the Android runtime, but maybe the problem isn't from my phone.

Well yes, but Google services is just that and API to better interface with google products. That way, android as an OS is (and should remain) vendon agnostic. That means that anyone can get the AOSP android code and build a functional OS and then add their on layer of services (see Nokia X and Microsoft services).
