BlackBerry clearly has it's share of serious problems, but it seems to me that Apple just left the door open with the iPhone 5S/C announcement. Repackaging the iPhone 5 in plastic and calling it the "C", and upgrading the processor and camera technology (not hardware) and calling it the "5S" is far from the innovation that many have come to expect from Apple. Even the general consensus around my office (full of people who are iPhone users and don't know squat about phones) is "that's it?"

I'd love to see BB come out with a very aggressive campaign for the Z30, because it seems to me that the phone now has a shot in hell of looking very competitive against the iPhone.

    Thoughts?

im not sure where you have been the last couple of years... Apple does not innovate anymore

just checkout the imore coverage of the event where rene says that sd cards, nfc and wireless charging are 'not needed' on phones... but a 64-bit chip and fingerprint scanner are?
all apple is about is what they can add to the device at low cost to themselves to keep it CURRENT. they throw in one 'new' or 'hyped' feature every release and ride on those coat tails.

EVERY iphone release I have seen has focused on 'the best screen ever' ... NOT EVEN MENTIONED at this event, because it is the (S)AME .
it is EXCELLENT marketing, but NOT innovation as with iPhone 4. I believe that the real game changer was iPhone 4, which is why i bought it, and since then the improvements have been very minimal.

So, YES! the door is open... but it has been for a year or more. it will just be VERY difficult for anyone to overtake apple because they had a very big headstart in full touch screen.

That is a pretty significant process upgrade! First 64 bit processor and OS for a Smartphone. Killer GPU. Fingerprint scanning technology built into the phone, (others have done this, but not as elegantly). There were other enhancements via the OS. In comparison when you compare a 5s to a Q10, or even the Z10, it makes the BlackBerry pricing look even more silly IMHO. 5c was a disappointment as many were hoping for a lower price, but the 5s seems like they did some good work on. Z30 will still be 32 bit processing/processor, and probably equal pricing.

We will have to read the reviews but I expect an even better camera for sure. Combined with the new OS ... going to be a great phone BUT still 4 inches ... ???? the new "perfect size" is around 4.3 to 4.5 inches.

Good post - I agree. Apple is relying on reputation and it's marketing machine at this point, and I think this latest iPhone release is proof of that. If BlackBerry can be aggressive with marketing and promoting the Z30 against the 5S, I think the phone stands a chance. With that said, BB still needs a more mature app selection with SnapChat, Instagram, etc. as I think that is still BB10's biggest stumbling block.

The reality is that the general public has no idea what processor is inside any phone, and many don't care. How do they measure performance? With words like "fast" and "slow". 64 bit processor is a big deal, but to the general public, that number means nothing. More importantly, it will make the phone very fast, but "fast" is not really a measurable spec that many people care about. Screen size, camera megapixels, screen clarity/PPI...those are the specs that the general public bases their opinion on, and a big part of why Samsung has been so successful.

What good does a 64 bit processor do you unless you're actually throwing more than 4GB of RAM at it? All you're doing is adding onto the memory threads without anything to access them. It sounds nice and plays to the Android spec porn crowd, but other than that it really has little use unless iOS and OS X are merging sometime down the line.

Isn't this contradictory? In your opening post you posited the idea that the iPhone 5S left the door open due to lackluster upgrades. But when significant upgrades are mentioned (64-bit is a beast on a phone) you state that the public doesn't know and doesn't care.

the z10 couldn't even touch the old iphone 5, what makes you think the z30 with basically a bigger screen can beat the new iphone 5s? its not like z30 is so different from z10.

The new camera is a 5-element lens with an aperture of f/2.2 on a sensor surface area 15 percent larger. The previous aperture was f/2.4.

When the z30 is revealed apple will be the odd man out with the smallest screens of any phone maker.

A position BlackBerry was in not too long ago.
What i find interesting is they cancelled the current ip5 for this.and are keeping the ip4.
Clearly an indicator of the current iphones success and pooularity.

Step it up apple your being left behind by even BlackBerry ROTFL!

The sensor size (per pixel) is really important. I'm glad that Apple keeps sticking to the point that this is more important than the number of pixels, because they are absolutely right. I think pictures on the 5S will prove that.

The fingerprint id is more convenient than putting your passcode or swipe each time, so I'm looking forward to that.

But other than that, I'm not sure the speed increases will be that much of a selling point. I think the whole upgrade from 4S/5 to 5S is small enough overall that people who are upgrade-eligible will probably at least look at Microsoft/Nokia, etc.

Ok so they put 64 bit processor in the phone means nothing if don't have anything to take advantage of it. PC's have had 64-bit processors for years and still the vast majority of software is designed at 32-bit systems. This is the same sistuation apple is in 64-bit processors but mothing to take advantage of it.

what I don't get is this... if fingerprint id is truely more convenient, (which I don't disagree with.. when it works right at least) why haven't they added it to their laptops? It's not like IBM hasn't been doing it for years already. I think that Apple just wanted to add something to the phone to sell it, without a true belief in it.. if they believed in it, we'd see it in the laptops. Or maybe i'm just crazy!
