What are you trying to delete? SMS ,EMAILS, OR Pictures?
If deleting sms and emails go to the date at the top of the messages click the blackberry button and hit delete prior that will clear out all of your messages. Not quite sure on how to delete pictures though.
You don't have to hold the shift button, just click it once, scroll up or down to highlight all the CONSECUTIVE emails/texts that you want to delete, hit menu and select delete messages.
This way is good if there are a bunch of emails grouped together that you want to get rid of, and don't necessarily want to delete everything prior to a particular date, which is what the other option is for. For example, I use it when I have a bunch of spam email.
