By this I mean, if i go to a web page, then switch applications but forget to close the browser, does it continue to use data usage. Or, if I stay on the same page, lets say a google search, does it not incur any additional usage?

Good question.....don't you have unlimited data plan??
I do, but I don't want to fall asleep and find out I exceeded the 6Gib limit on my "unlimited" plan
I'd love to know the answer too, anyone?

No. Once a HTML page has loaded, it sits there waiting for you to activate a link or button.
I use my Curve with Wifi only and have set iGoogle as my home page. Financial information and GMail is static until I refresh the page.
The same is true of a desktop computer, which can be monitored for network activity.
Some desktop pages do continue to access data, usually the advertising components like banners or frame content. We are spared that on our mobile devices.
