This is the thread for CrackIT. CrackIT is a program to remove the current IT policy from your BlackBerry phone.



The program is based upon naviwilliams' thread http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/remo...lackberry-569/.

I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS PROGRAM. I CANNOT TEST IT AS I DO NOT HAVE AN IT POLICY TO REMOVE. I know that it works because it does what I designed it to do.

Here is an extract from CrackIT's help text.

HOW TO USE CRACKIT

CrackIT is very simple to use. However it needs a couple of things before it can do its job.

• Desktop Manager must be installed for CrackIT ro run correctly because it is Desktop Manger that actually does the real work.
• Your BlackBerry phone must be correctly connected to the PC with the phne�s PIN number displayed in the bottom left of the Desktop Manager panel before you run CrackIT.
• With these two things correctly done, run CrackIT and click the big button. You will now be asked to enter the password RemoveITPolicy (correctly cased) before CrackIT will proceed. This is just to make sure that accidents do not happen. Crackit will now do what is described in What CrackIT does. Immediately Desktop Manager will be launched and the new factory policy will be applied.
• This only needs to be done once and the newly applied policy will remain active until a different one is applied.

WHAT CRACKIT DOES

CrackIT replaces the current IT Policy on your Blackberry by replacing it with a default policy. The default poicy is the one that your BlackBerry was delivered from the factory with.

To do what it does CrackIT needs to write to your system registry. It puts the following ( HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Policy Manager C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Policy Manager\policy.bin )
the registry and leaves it there. CrackIT does not remove this registry setting even after you remove the program. You may do so yourself if you wish.

CrackIT also uses the file policy.bin. This is the standard IT Policy that gets written to your phone. At program installation time policy.bin gets copied to Program Files/CrackIT. When the program is run and the big button pressed policy.bin is moved (not copied) to C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Policy Manager (CrackIT creates the folder Policy Manager) where it needs to remain so that Desktop Manager can find it.

Once the file move and the registry patch has been applied CrackIT runs Desktop Manager. Your phone needs to be connected at this time and if it is, the current IT Policy on your phone will now be replaced.

This IS the naviwilliams method. It is just in a program now.

I have not been able to test this program as I have had no phones that need an IT Policy removing.

I have thoroughly tested all the functions and file/registrey locations and they all work properly under Windows XP 32 bit.

Testing is needed here and I will change the prgram if it need changing.

The next program will be CrackTools and is going to put a 2008 interface on some of the JL_Cmder functions.

I wanted to bring CrackPic and Crack IT out as single usage programs since they are respectively rather simple to use with no risk and a program that is very specialised in use.

CrackTools will be defined by feedback that I get in the forums so if you have any requests, anytime over the next month will be good.

I can't test it because I have an IT Policy which I must not remove, which leads me to my suggestion, that you warn people with employer-provided phones that they should not use your tool. Then if they do it anyway, well, you warned them specifically, not just with your general disclaimer.

Outside of installing BB Unite! again does anyone know where I
can get an IT Policy .bin file to install a test this out?

I'm not sure I fully understand what this does. Could someone please elaborate on what is meant by IT policy? Just for my general knowledge.

An IT Policy is the way a company enforces its IT Security rules on blackberries that have inside the firewall access. These devices have BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) accounts instead of the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) accounts that ordinary consumer users typically have.

BES users get OTA synching of their Calendar, Email, Address Book, Tasks, and Memos. In return, they accept that the company can monitor all their email, log their phone calls, and in general control every aspect of their phone: whether they can install apps, use the Media Card or Bluetooth, or access the internet, for example.

IT Policies can be severe, or very benign. Mine only requires me to use a password and sets the max timeout to 30 minutes.

If you have an employer-provided phone, and attempt to remove the IT Policy with CrackIT or any other tool, your attempt will be detected the next time you attempt to log on to the company servers, the IT policy will be pushed back on your phone, and you could face severe disciplinary consequences for violating security.

Sometimes people legitimately sell phones that have IT policies on them. If you buy one of these phones off eBay, for example, and it has a very restrictive IT Policy, you may find it's almost useless. CrackIT is for you. It enables you to remove the policy that the seller should have removed before they sold it.

Maybe the ease of use of CrackIT will mean fewer phones sold with IT Policies on them. We can hope.

Well I did the official testing for you, and it works

to a certain extent. I got the policy lifted, but still locked down on firewall and download manager is still showing on device.
