My theory is that we have built a culture of overly simple binary competition, where everything seemingly must come down to a winner vs. loser - {good vs. evil} {bigger vs. smaller} {Cowboys vs. Redskins} {Yankees vs. Red Sox} {democrat vs. republican} {liberal vs. conservative} {iPhone vs BB} {Verizon vs. AT&T} {RIM vs. Apple} {PS3 vs. XBox} {ProLife vs. ProChoice} {Ipod vs. MP3 player} {Netbook vs. Notebook} etc..
So, while I get your point I don't think it really has anything to do with phone(s), they are just the latest distraction.
