Is anyone else getting flooded with email spam on their carrier provided BIS email address? I don't even use it, and I never provide it to anyone. Everything goes through my BES Exchange account, so I don't know why I'm getting like 10 spam messages a day on the @carrier.blackberry.net address all of the sudden. Is it just me?

I haven't had any issues on my phone. Sorry to hear you are getting spamed!
Now I am having problems from friends spamming my normal home email account, from their phones, and it did mess up my PC. The friends do have a different platform, but I can't say that is the reason for the spam..

If you don't use your carrier email address then just delete it?

I am also getting spam emails to my BIS email. I have been getting viagra emails for 3 days now. I am going to call my service provider today about that.

It's not just you. I think it was this past Monday I started getting Viagra spam to my blackberry.net address. Just all of a sudden, never happened before.

I contacted BlackBerry help through Twitter and they suggested this:
KB28151-How to add a filter from the BlackBerry smartphone for a BlackBerry Internet Service account

Not a huge help though cause the originating addresses seem to be almost random. I'm going to try filtering by subject and see if it works any better. You can also add filters through the BIS setup page..doing it on device is a bit of a pain in the a$$.

Same here. I was suspicious because it kind of coincided with an app for screen capture I installed. I'll try the filtering thing along with calling support.

Yes! They're all Viagra emails! Glad it's not just me. I'm going to see if I can figure out how to log this with RIM. I'll probably have to go through my carrier.

Had you installed any apps around the time the spam started?

Nope, don't think so. I updated to the newest version of BB App World, but that's it.

I have getting them as well for the past week or so. Also to a Telus.blackberry.net account. Are the rest of you on Telus as well?

Oh and in addition to the Viagra emails, I just got my second email from USPS. The first one had a -load of attachments; I forwarded it to my PC and the virus scanner went crazy! This one just has HTML pictures embedded in it (which I haven't downloaded obviously).

    Me too.

I got that dummy USPS email as well. I'm beginning to wonder if someone hacked Telus and somehow got a list of our @telus.blackberry.net addresses...

Good theory. I've asked the same question in the TELUS section of another forum. We'll see what type of response I get there.

The wife is on at&t and is getting flooded with Viagra emails. She did not download any apps; from the replies this seems to be a problem with NA carriers.

Reminding members... the <carrier>.blackberry.net email is handled by BIS, and there are filter options within the BIS setup web pages.

For those who never use the email address under attack the easiest option is to select "Do Not Forward to Device".

For those who DO use the address, you will need to look at the problem messages and try to find a usable keyword (like "viagra") which is in the sender or subject line for most of the problem messages. That should reduce the nuisance until you can get to your network provider and have them improve the filtering at the server.

The interesting question is why this hit so many users around the same time. email addresses on <carrier>.blackberry.net are not predictable so it might be worth discussing whether the victims are those who actually *use and publish* the address, or whether (like me) the address has never been used since it was created.

I've been getting at least 5 per day since Monday July 9th. A search on twitter shows that others are having the same problem. I've tried setting up filters using keywords, but it's not working. I've tweeted blackberryhelp 4 times already, no reply. I'm fairly sure that there is an issue within the internal spam filters that RIM has in place, judging by how it started on a particular day, and others are experiencing it.

The cynical side of me suspected that RIM sold our carrier.blackberry.net email address' for some extra cash, but that's HIGHLY unlikely and me just being cynical.

I've set up many different filters, with different spellings and so on, they go right past them for some reason. I think I've tried every combination that i can think of.

Filters have seemed to work for me so far. No spam since initial setup. Make sure to check the spellings- they have used subtle changes such as "Vigara" in subject that will get past a filter for "Viagra". Oh, and its a "att.BB.net addy"

Also try filtering "purchase.vigara" and "buy.vigara"

filters are the best solution. if your email is listed in some list of junk mail companies it will never end..
