Isn't android an open source operating system? Why can't BlackBerry make it's own flavor of Linux /android?

I'd imagine this would open up way more possibilities to appealing to mainstream consumers.

    Yes, yes they can.

I think BlackBerry wanted the Priv out as soon as possible. Hence some of the parts of the operating system are still not refined.

The Android market responds way better to restraint than reskinning.

    This!!

More and more Android apps require Google Play services. Without this, we have a similar situation to what we have on BB10.

Just to reiterate: if BlackBerry forks Android, they cannot use Google Play Services.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, BlackBerry can make it's own android os, but to get google services on it, it needs permission?

If they make the skin too heavy, it might cause the phone to lag like an old Windows Vista computer.

    Correct.

Android isn't the goal. Apps (aka GPS) are the crown jewel.

It would be foolish for BBRY to fork Android at this point. OHA is the only real option.

The resounding success *snort* of Amazon's Android devices wrt competitors is proof enough.

Nearly all software you've ever installed had a license agreement you've agreed to to be able to install the software.

Great tablets... still rock a few rooted ones now.

That lack of Play Store hurt it. B&N got with Samsung and OHA soon after the Nook HD/HD+.
