hi what do you guys think about the data plans here in Canada?

personally i think they suck i mean every US provider has unlimited data plans were as Canada has at most had 5GB for $100 with 600Mins Telus, rogers has $70 1GB+ Unlimited Social Networking and so on, i think were getting ripped off big time Canada needs unlimited plans just like the states has at the very most telus had at one time unlimited data for $50 and once the HSPA phones came out they took it away, rogers had 6GB at one time also with the Iphone 3G i think can't really remember, it's so bad here in Canada

Yes we have horrible data plans,

But the US will lose unlimited soon enough,
Rogers had their 60GB for $30 end in October 2010, now it is 5GB,

There are some major differences between Canadian networks and American networks,
NO network in the US has to deal with population density of 1 person per 10 square miles,
What is unfortunate for Canadians and everyone really is telecoms are like socialist governments tax everyone to pay for the areas that can't pay themselves, the "wealthy" areas being population dense get faster speeds sooner, more towers, and such, but those areas that the population can not support towers but towers are required are paid by our high costs.

All this said I don't think our extremely high costs our justified based on the profit margins the carriers are getting, and their lack of quality customer support,

What are the plans like in the states?
For 55$ a month I have 1GB, 200 mins (unlimited after six and on weekends), unlimited family callings, unlimited to 10 numbers nationwide as well as unlimited outgoing and incoming texts, caller id, call waiting, conference calling, i really think that is more than enough for me. i don't even come close to the 1GB or the 200 minutes.

Canada is the most expensive country to own a cell phone.

For a cell phone plan I was being charged $75 per month. I can't remember what exactly it was I was getting since I kept changing it to make it cheaper. It started off more expencive then that.

I now find that rediculous and I'm not sure I will go back to paying that much. Right now I'm in Australia. My 9700 is unlocked and I'm using a pay as you go SIM. I bought a BB Data SIM which was $29 for 6 months for unlimited BB Data and umlimited internet. For it to remain active I have to put atleast $15 on it each month...I decided to go with $29 per month which gives me $400 for texts and calls @ 25c a text and 90c a minute call. I also have 250 free texts as a bonus with the plan. I also have free Vodafone-Vodafone calling. We also don't pay for incoming calls or texts here.

I don't want to go back to paying $75/mo for a cell phone plan.

Who were you through? You should always know what's in your plan because a lot of times you can get a cheaper one than what your using depending on what you use.
I always want to know what I'm getting for a plan, because if it isn't suiting my needs I'm not going to take it.

I have an unlimited Data plan and I live in Canada and use a Canadian carrier, Sasktel. My unlimited data plan costs, I believe, $60 a month which includes tethering. Maybe it's just certain Canadian carriers that 'suck', but I know my carrier doesn't.

I think Canada is the worst place in the world for a cell phone enthusiasts since we are more dependent in establishing long term relationship with carriers to get significant discount and savings.
Heck we still have 3 year plans.

Personally I still think MTS is the best wireless provider in Canada because they stopped charging the stupid system access fee (thank god!) and still kept the same price for data plans. Here are 2 of their unlimited data plans they offer now and kills what the Big 3 offer by a mile:

    $39.99/month, bundled ($44.99 unbundled)

    250 weekday minutes

    Unlimited personal Email access

    Unlimited surf/browse/socialize/IM

Unlimited local calls between any five people of your choice – any provider, mobile or landline

Unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 6p.m.

    No System Access Fee

Unlimited Wi-Fi - MTS 4G wireless network customers only.

    24 month contract.

    $49.99/month, bundled ($54.99 unbundled)

    300 weekday minutes

    Unlimited personal Email access

    Unlimited Text Messaging

    Unlimited surf/browse/socialize/IM

Unlimited local and long distance calls between MTS Mobility customers

Unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 6p.m.

Unlimited Wi-Fi - MTS 4G wireless network customers only.

    No System Access Fee

    24 month contract.

But you'd have to add call display and voicemail seperately and can be bundled for a discount. I think the fact that they offer unlimited data, 2 year contract instead of 3, and stopped charging system access fee makes it well worth it :P

No SAF for Rogers and Fido too. (Rogers just axed it and it applies to new plans I think.)

65.00 gets me unlimited minutes anytime Canada & US, 6gb data, unlimited texts Canada & US, VM, caller ID and some other small things.

Yeah I know I've been with them for about 2 years now (fido and rogers) but I said that because that's what was keeping me from signup with them in the first place but now I'm jealous lol. Btw how'd you get such an awesome plan unless you've been with Rogers for a long time.

I've been with Rogers since the first motorola flip... about 17 years (I'm old). Others that have been with them for a shorter period have gotten the same plan though.

It was on Bell Canada. Well, I still technically have the plan. I didn't cancel my contract with them before I left the country. It is put down to $20 a month while I'm gone. When I go back ill tweak it to be as cheap as I can get with them for what I need. I've done that before. That's how it's $75/mo, it used it be more. I saw that Wind Mobile has nice plans for cheap so I may switch over to them after this contract is up. Or I may pay full price for a phone and go with a month to month plan. I hate being locked in a contract. This is my first one, all my other phones I saved and bought the phone full price.

I had enough of Robellus and their garbage plans so I went with WIND. Holiday Miracle Plan is all I will ever need/want in a plan. Since I live in Toronto and rarely leave it WIND works for me, just that their network isn't always the best.

I disagree, I think we have great options for data plans in Canada. If you want (practically) unlimited data, Rogers offered 6GB for quite a while. Personally, I never go over 50MB/month on my BlackBerry, so I have a 150MB plan for $10 month. That's a great deal that isn't available in the US (to my knowledge).

Does the States really have unlimited or is it unlimited in name only? I remember hearing somewhere that there's a cap in the fine print.

5-6gb is as close to unlimited as you're going to get and more than what most average users need.

Telus offers similar addons. $10 for 100mb is the smallest... With the wifi coverage nowadays, that is probablly enough for most average users.

As for Blackberry guy's question, I can't comment on us carriers, but I have seen some carriers offering "unlimited data". In the fine print it is 6gb of data usage. Anything over the 6gb is not charges (technically still "unlimites") but is at a rediced speed... This is probablly to encourage people not to cancel home wifi, and simply teather, or use mobile broadband hotspots etc... For everything
